The NFL’s new national anthem rule is a hot topic, but it’s not the only rule the league is looking to tweak before the start of next season.
One of the other non-anthem areas the NFL is looking to implement change is on the kickoff in order to reduce the number of collisions that take place on the current version of the play.
A number of suggestions to incentivize teams to kick the ball out of the end zone have been booted around, one being to award the kicking team a bonus point if a kickoff goes through the uprights.
Since they have the most powerful kicker in the game, Justin Tucker, the Baltimore Ravens have been the biggest proponents of putting the rule in place, although it’s unlikely to happen.
“I’m on record as advocating that that should [count as] a point,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said in 2016. “I’m serious now. But really, how exciting would that make it? If we’re going to make these touchbacks so valuable, let’s do it, let’s go for it.”
Despite his wishes, the rule has never been voted upon at a league meeting, let alone adopted.
And, even though it would be good for player safety, exciting for late-game strategy and introduce a possible exception to the goaltending rule that’s used on field goals, the league is unlikely to give the Ravens what they want, according to ProFootballTalk.
