In a new book, the lawyer who got Aaron Hernandez acquitted of a 2012 double murder and spent time with the troubled tight end in his final days implies the Patriots may have been partially at fault for Odin Lloyd’s death.
According to attorney Jose Baez, Hernandez met with Patriots coach Bill Belichick at the NFL Combine in 2013 and told him that he feared for his safety.
Worried some shady associates knew where he lived in New England, Hernandez asked for a trade to an NFL team on the West Coast.
Belichick denied Hernandez’s request and told his player to move to a new house and contact the Patriots’ director of security.
“Aaron told me the coach was incensed by the idea, and reminded Aaron that the team had made a significant investment in him.” Baez writes in Unnecessary Roughness: Inside the Trial and Final Days of Aaron Hernandez. “Had they taken it seriously, how would things have worked out?”
Of course, as we all know, Hernandez was then involved in the death of Lloyd – although his murder conviction has been vacated.
Lloyd’s family has previously gone after Hernandez’s estate in court.
In his book, Baez also revealed the contents of Hernandez’s suicide notes.
