From Super Bowl Heroes to Nothing in Just a Blink

Here are some memories of what almost was.

There is a club of receivers, such as Larry Fitzgerald and Randy Moss, who made a stunning catch that for a split second, seemed to secure a championship. But then it was taken away. The New York Times put together a list of memories of what almost was. Like one of the most amazing catches in Super Bowl history, which occurred late in the fourth quarter last year in Houston. Julio Jones of the Atlanta Falcons juggled the downfield pass but was able to contort his body while falling and held the ball before he, and it, hit the ground. The announcers commented on Jones’s skill, concentration and body control. But then, the New England Patriots completed their comeback from a 28-3 deficit with a game-tying acrobatic catch from Julian Edelman that matched, and maybe exceeded Jones’s artistry. Jones’s play has all but been forgotten. Then there is Larry Fitzgerald. He caught a short pass from Kurt Warner, shed a tackle by midfield and made it the final 50 yards untouched for a touchdown, his second in less than five minutes. This put Arizona ahead for the first time in Super Bowl XLIII against Pittsburgh. But then, the Steelers went 78 yards in eight plays. From the Arizona 6, Ben Roethlisberger whipped a pass to Santonio Holmes, who, despite being triple-covered, came down with a toe-tap catch in the back corner of the end zone with 35 seconds left.
