Josh McDaniels was definitely the flashy choice for head coach for the Indianapolis Colts. But when McDaniels bailed on the team despite his verbal agreement, the Colts were left scrambling for another option. Matt Nagy, a young up-and-coming head coach, was interviewed but he decided to go to Chicago. Mike Vrabel, who had been a coordinator for only one season and spent most of his playing career in New England was also discussed. But the Colts ultimately decided against the flashy choice, and instead went with the respected and mature choice when they picked 56-year-old Philadelphia offensive coordinator Frank Reich. Reich was a late arrival to the NFL coaching world, writes ESPN, and he didn’t start coaching until a decade after he retired from his 14-year NFL playing career. He has a past with the Colts — they gave him his first opportunity as offensive assistant and then to coach the quarterbacks and wide receivers. Reich spent the past two seasons with Philadelphia as their offensive coordinator, after spending time in both Arizona and San Diego. Though Eagles head coach Doug Pederson called the plays, Reich had a significant role in putting together the game plan that helped the team average 27.9 points a game over the past two seasons, which is the fourth most in the NFL in that span. Reich is the first Super Bowl-winning offensive coordinator to become head coach of a different team the following season since Mike Shanahan left San Francisco for Denver in 1995.
