The Indianapolis Colts just named former Eagles offensive coordinator Frank Reich as their new head coach, after their top choice, New England’s Josh McDaniels, changed his mind and stayed with the Patriots. Then last week, the Minnesota Vikings nabbed former Eagles quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo, who helped develop Carson Wentz into an MVP candidate and rebuilt Nick Foles into the man who won the Eagles their first Super Bowl, to be their new offensive coordinator. This might seem like business as usual in the NFL — copycatting and old-boy networking. But copying the Eagles means more than just filling the playbook with run-pass options. Teams that hire Doug Pederson’s assistants and sign on to the Eagles’ way of things may be getting something much better than what they bargained for: a whole new mindset for player development and team management. They will be getting a refreshing new culture, very different from the Bill Belichick style of coaching. For example, DeFilippo told Bleacher Report that “coaching is tailoring your game plan to what your quarterback and your players do well.” His goal is to orchestrate game plans that make sense for the available talent.
