Yale University is taking the state of Connecticut to court after the institution was blocked from turning its single-sex bathrooms into gender neutral toilets, Heat Street is reporting.
Representatives for Yale filed an appeal to the state’s Superior Court after the government of Connecticut denied permission to change gender-assigned bathrooms in an attempt to accommodate LGBTQ students.
A spokesperson for Democrat Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy told Reuters that Yale will likely be successful.
“We stand firmly with Yale in their effort to create a more welcoming campus,” she told Reuters. “This has been a priority for Governor Malloy’s administration and, now that this issue has been brought to our attention, we are prepared to work with Yale toward a solution.”
The contention stems from Connecticut’s building code, which requires buildings to have a certain number of gender-labeled bathrooms. This means that Yale would have to build additional bathrooms that are gender-exclusive, and is arguing that the campus has no space for the new bathrooms.
