As the January 23 nomination date looms, Variety has published its Oscar predictions. Lacking in the types of movies the Academy tends to reward, the 2018 affair will likely celebrate more fresh faces than years past. Variety predicts the Academy will choose eight films for its Best Picture slate, ranging from more traditional nominations like Dunkirk and The Post to less conventional picks from new directors like Get Out and Lady Bird. Best Actress could pit heavyweights Meryl Streep and Frances McDormand up against the already-beloved by the Academy Saoirse Ronan. Best Actor looks like a star-studded affair, with Denzel Washington and Daniel Day-Lewis going for their third and fourth Oscars, respectively, and James Franco, Gary Oldman and Timothee Chalamet going for their first.
