Tom Cruise’s ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Won’t Premiere Until 2020

The sequel's original flight plan was a summer 2019 debut.

Tom Cruise’s Top Gun sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, won’t be joining us as soon as we thought. The release date has officially been pushed back nearly a year from July 12, 2019 to June 26, 2020, reports Variety. Paramount Pictures announced the move on Wednesday, saying that the extra time will give filmmakers the opportunity to work out the logistics of presenting flight sequences with new technologies and planes.

Top Gun: Maverick is going to be set in a world of drone technology that will look at the end of dogfighting. Cruise is set to play a flight instructor and Val Kilmer will return as well. Actor Miles Teller has been chosen to play the son of Goose (in the original Top Gun, Goose was played by Anthony Edwards, and was the copilot to Cruise’s Maverick). The film also recently added Jon Hamm, Ed Harris and Lewis Pullman.
