You Can Go To 1,500 Museums Across the U.S. For Free This Saturday

Saturday, September 22, is museum day, which means that more than 1,500 museums will open their doors for free. Organized by Smithsonian Magazine, the annual event includes free admission to museums and cultural institutions in all 50 states. You can go to the Zoo Miami in Florida or the National Barber Museum in Canal Winchester, Ohio. Visitors are allowed to download one ticket per email address, and each ticket allows for free admission for two people.

Smithsonian recommends these 10 institutions:

Zoo Miami, Miami: There are more than 3,000 animals representing 500 species, as well as 1,200 species of flora. It is the largest and oldest zoological garden in Florida.

Cooper, Hewitt, New York City: Their collection is made up of more than 210,000 design objects spanning 30 centuries. It is the only museum in the nation to focus exclusively on historical and contemporary design.

Southern Food and Beverage Museum and The Museum of the American Cocktail, New Orleans: Of course New Orleans has two museums dedicated to food and drink, and you’re going to want to check out both of them.

African American Museum in Philadelphia: Spanning over 100 years, the “Audacious Freedom: African Americans in Philadelphia 1776-1876” is a permanent exhibition at the museum, and it relays the stories and contributions of Philadelphians of African descent in the years that follow our nation’s founding.

Desert Botanical Garden, Phoenix: The garden has more than 50,000 plants, including 4,400 species in the garden’s living collection, 400 rare and endangered species and more than 27,000 individual plants that have scientific records affiliated with them.

Museum of Pop Culture, Seattle: Check out “Pearl Jam: Home and Away” about the popular alt-rock band or “Infinite Worlds of Science Fiction,” which has more than 150 pieces of memorabilia from popular movies and TV shows like Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica.

Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, Ohio: This museum opened on June 6, 1916 and has continued to evolve to become one of the largest art museums in the Midwest. You can see work by Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock, Vincent van Gogh, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Sandro Botticelli.

San Antonio Museum of Art, San Antonio, Texas: You get a 360-degree look at the state’s history and heritage through both art and architecture.

New Bedford Whaling Museum, New Bedford, Massachusetts: New Bedford was one of the most important whaling ports in the world during the 19th century. It has four intact whale skeletons and the world’s largest ship model that dates back to 1916 and includes nearly 90 feet in length.

Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, New York City: You can see the space shuttle Enterprise, aircraft carrier USS Intrepid and submarine Growler, on top of other pieces in the museum’s vast collection.
