Amazon is removing books from its marketplace that claim you can cure your kids of autism by drinking and bathing in toxic bleach.
According to NBC News the retail giant will also remove material that provides misinformation about vaccines.
“Healing the Symptoms Known as Autism” and “Fight Autism and Win” are two books that have been confirmed by Amazon to have been removed from the store. But the retailer declined to provide specifics as to why or if they were taken out of circulation as part of a larger effort to curb the spread autism and vaccine misinformation.
In “Healing the Symptoms Known as Autism,” the author claims that chlorine dioxide, a form of bleach, has cured 191 children of autism with a treatment that literally poisons the kids. The FDA warns that ingesting the chemical can cause “severe nausea, vomiting and life-threatening low blood pressure from dehydration.”
The other book removed from the site featured an unproven treatment for autism that involved the patient taking an antidote for mercury poisoning. The treatment was spun out of a theory, which has been debunked, that autism is caused by mercury exposure during vaccination as a child.
Larry Cook, an anti-vaxxer who recently had Facebook ads removed due to targeting pregnant women with misinformation about vaccines, says Amazon removed the titles because they were found to be “in violation” of Amazon’s content guidelines. Cook sells similar content in his Amazon store.
