On your next African safari, you could call a luxury treehouse dome home. That’s what safari company Asilia Africa offers up for its “Highlands” adventure, centered in Ngorongoro Conservation Area in Tanzania.
Asilia offers eight different domes, each of which is made out of canvas and perspex (an acrylic glass). But it’s not just some tent in the wilderness exposed to the elements: Each dome comes complete with hot running water, a shower, and flushable toilet; an in-room wood-burning stove; free daily laundry service; and in-room power. Most are one-bedroom affairs, but a three-bedroom dome can be requested. The treetop hideaways are spaced about 50-65 feet away from the other, so there’s a good deal of privacy, too.
Situated at the edge of a mountain forest near the Olmoti volcano, safari-goers will be able to view native species such as leopard, buffalo, and elephant, who all call the area home. You can also hike ancient Maasai trails to the summit of the volcano’s crater and actually visit with local Maasai communities. There’s also a separate crater hike where guests get to see flamingos.
Luckily, it’s low season at the moment (although the camp is open year-round). Standard prices per person/per night run $430–$895. But if you stay in the next four to six weeks, it’s just $400 per night.
