One Canadian hunter who escaped a charging bear practically unscathed is very lucky to be alive.

Richard Wesley uploaded frightening video of the confrontation, in which he encounters a black bear while quietly bow hunting near the Fire River in Ontario, Canada. Footage shows that the bear initially seems unbothered — or perhaps unaware — of Wesley’s presence.

The placid scene quickly shifts, however, when Wesley attempts to scare off the bear by making a deep growling noise; the animal charges at him, knocking away the camera in the process. By the time the hunter retrieves the camera, he’s visibly shaken by the experience.

“I should have shot a long time ago,” Wesley tells viewers.
