South Park co-creator Trey Parker bills himself and partner Matt Stone as equal-opportunity offenders, but he now admits he went too far in one direction.
In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, Parker revealed the hit comedy show he has co-written and directed with Stone for the last 20 years got hung up on one theme for too long last season—President Trump.
“We fell into the same trap that Saturday Night Live fell into, where it was like, “Dude, we’re just becoming CNN now. We’re becoming: ‘Tune in to see what we’re going to say about Trump,’” Parker said. “Matt and I hated it but we got stuck in it somehow.”
Parker acknowledged that the coverage rakes in ratings, but said that he and Stone aren’t interested in the saturation anymore: “I just don’t care,” Parker said.
But he did lend interesting insight into whether or not he thinks the president has a sense of humor.
“He’s not intentionally funny but he is intentionally using comedic art to propel himself. The things that we do — being outrageous and taking things to the extreme to get a reaction out of people — he’s using those tools. At his rallies he gets people laughing and whooping,” Parker said.
“I don’t think he’s good at it. But it obviously sells — it made him president.”
