Mike Myers Returning to Television With ‘The Gong Show’ Revival

Former SNL cast member, 'Austin Powers' actor returns to small screen in weirdest way possible.

Mike Myers has created some of the most memorable characters in cinematic history. Pretty much anyone who grew up in the ’90s can endlessly quote Wayne’s World or Austin Powers. Then the aughts came and Myers rode the wave of Shrek‘s success and then the bottom pretty much fell out.

In the last few years, notes Vanity Fair, he’s been doing fairly out-of-character documentary work, with Being Canadian and Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon.

And now, Myers is looking to rekindle America’s love affair with his character acting—but maybe with one of his oddest characters yet: Tommy Maitland.

The SNL veteran will host ABC’s revival of The Gong Show as the fictional British comedian, with a fake backstory, accent, and loads of makeup. He’s even got his own Twitter handle.

The Maitland character was first unveiled on the Jimmy Kimmel Show in May.
