David Letterman is emerging from retirement to return to the small screen, according to Variety. The comedian and former Late Show host has just signed a deal with Netflix for an hour-long show that will reportedly combine long-form interviews with in-the-field segments, and is set to debut next year.
“I feel excited and lucky to be working on this project for Netflix,” Letterman reportedly said. “Here’s what I have learned, if you retire to spend more time with your family, check with your family first. Thanks for watching, drive safely.”
The 70-year-old’s post-Late Show career plans have been the source of much speculation. Variety noted that Letterman won’t be staying in full retirement like his TV mentor Johnny Carson did after stepping down at NBC’s Tonight Show. But it’s unclear if he’ll be keeping the robust beard he’s grown since stepping away from the cameras.
