Behold the Underwater Cables That Make the Internet Possible

We all know that the internet keeps us connected across the planet, but we probably don’t understand the physical link. There are roughly 300 undersea fiberoptic cables in the ocean handling about 90 percent of data traffic. This is your chance to take a look at them. These cables are about the thickness of a soda can and protected by materials including mylar tape and petroleum jelly. They may lie over 30,000 feet under the sea. They’re at risk to earthquakes, but so far have held up well against shark attacks. (Yes, apparently sharks hate the internet.)
