When the NFL kicks off in September, it’s appearing more and more likely quarterback Colin Kaepernick will find himself on the outside looking in for the second consecutive season.
After the Seahawks canceled a workout with Kaepernick last week under suspicious circumstances, former Green Bay Packers executive and current Sports Illustrated columnist Andrew Brandt believes it’s unlikely any team will give the 30-year-old a shot this year.
With the draft coming up next week and undrafted players becoming available to sign afterward, an additional 20-30 quarterbacks will be added to NFL rosters, making it even more unlikely that Kaepernick will be signed “absent a perfect storm of circumstances.”
Simply put, given that NFL owners will soon have an even larger pool of quarterbacks to choose from, the odds of one of them picking Kaepernick and his baggage at this point are very low.
“I knew that last year’s player/owner solidarity in response to the President’s remarks, with vivid images of owners kneeling and locking arms with players, would never last,” Brandt writes. “The Seahawks episode crystallizes what teams are thinking, in so many words: We will only employ you to be a football player if we know we are not employing you to be an activist.”
