He hasn’t won another major, yet, but Tiger Woods took another step in his journey back to the top of the golf world when he was appointed to the U.S. Ryder Cup team by captain Jim Furyk.

One of three golfers named as at-large picks to the squad – Phil Mickelson and Bryson DeChambeau were the others – Woods will be making his first appearance at the event since 2012 and eighth overall.

Despite his lengthy absence from playing in the international tournament, Woods was named as one of Furyk’s vice captains in January, but was not guaranteed a spot as a player. At the time, Woods was ranked 656th in the world and was recovering from his fourth back surgery.

Now, coming off five top-10 finishes this year and a second-place showing at the PGA Championship three weeks ago, Woods was a logical choice to make the team.

“Deep down, I wanted to make the team. I really wanted to play on it,” Woods said at a news conference following Furyk’s selection. “As the year progressed, I’ve kind of gained some traction and was somehow able to get some high finishes. And lo and behold, I’m a part of this team. It’s incredible, it really is, to look back at the start of the year and now to have accomplished a goal like that, to be a part of this team, and now to be a player is just – like I said, it’s beyond special.”

The 2018 Ryder Cup will be played at Le Golf National, outside Paris, starting September. 28.
