One Major League Baseball player just got sold for about as much as some peanuts and Cracker Jack.
As ESPN reports, the Texas Rangers sold righthand relief pitcher Ernesto Frieri to the Seattle Mariners for just a buck. The 32-year-old hurler had just a 0-1 record and a 5.14 ERA for the Rangers over six appearances this season. In short, not the greatest stat line.
That said, the Mariners may have just scored themselves a bargain-basement baller. Frieri has been employed as the late-inning henchman for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, where he put together a rather formidable few years on the mound, with 23 saves in 2012; 37 in 2013; and 11 in 2014 (he split the year between the Angels and the Pittsburgh Pirates).
The last few years have been a rocky road for Frieri, though. Before 2017, the last full season he played was in 2015 with the Tampa Bay Rays.
He’s been assigned to the Mariners’ AAA ball club in Tacoma, Washington.
