At an event marking the five-year anniversary of an initiative he launched after the 2012 shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, former President Barack Obama got an assist from an NBA star.

Obama and Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry teamed up at the My Brother’s Keeper event to address a group of about 100 minority boys and tell them they have a meaningful place in the world.

“We had to be able to say to them, ‘you matter, we care about you, we believe in you and we are going to make sure that you have the opportunities and chances to move forward just like everybody else’,” Obama said after the event.

The My Brother’s Keeper Alliance, which is part of the Obama Foundation, seeks to close opportunity gaps for minority boys, especially African-American, Latino, and Native American boys.

During their hour-long talk, Obama and Curry talked about themselves as teens, praised the value of teamwork, and answered questions from the audience.

Obama also praised single mothers and Curry told the boys not to take their lessons about women and life from what they see in rap or hip-hop videos

“If you are very confident about your sexuality, you don’t have to have eight women around you twerking,” Curry said. ”’Cause I’ve got one woman who I’m very happy with. And she’s a strong woman.”
