There will be many who won’t agree with him, but Shaquille O’Neal says the key to stopping school shootings is more cops, not fewer guns.
Given his background – the Hall of Famer previously served as a reserve police officer for the Port of Los Angeles police department, Miami Beach Police Department, Tempe Police Department and Golden Beach police department and reportedly plans to run for sheriff in Henry County outside Atlanta in 2020 – O’Neal’s stance isn’t all that surprising.
Nevertheless, O’Neal will likely take some flack on social media for what he said on WABC Radio’s “Curtis and Cosby” show on Wednesday.
“The government should give law enforcement more money,” he said. “Give more money, you recruit more people, and the guys that are not ready to go on the streets, you put them in front of the schools. You put ’em in front of the schools, you put ’em behind the schools, you put ’em inside the schools, and we need to pass information. … I would like to see police officers in schools, inner cities, private schools.”
In the same interview, O’Neal did say he supports students who are marching and walking out of class on Wednesday to protest gun violence in schools.
