After giving the Seattle Seahawks an April 15 deadline to work out a contract extension, Russell Wilson has set himself up to become the highest-paid player in the NFL by the end of the month.

The 30-year-old quarterback is the most important and dynamic player on Seattle’s roster and, as they have somewhat of a dearth of talent around him, the Seahawks will likely do whatever they can to retain him.

That could mean paying Wilson more per year than the $33.5 million annual salary the Green Bay Packers are paying star QB Aaron Rodgers. He also could insist on more guaranteed money than the $94.5 million the Atlanta Falcons are fully on the hook for with quarterback Matt Ryan.

But, for the potential investment in Wilson to be worth it, the Seahawks will likely need to change their run-heavy philosophy and let their star player air it out.

“The 2018 NFL season featured the fewest rush attempts per game per team on record, while also recording the most points and yards per team per game,” according to The Ringer. “Passing is clearly more efficient than running, but the Seahawks were the only team in the NFL that ran more than it threw last year. Seattle led the league in run-to-pass ratio overall and led the league on run-to-pass ratio on first down. The NFL has turned the rule-book faucets to open the passing-game floodgates, and Seattle is trying to swim upstream. If the Seahawks are going to pay Wilson the most money in NFL history, maybe they should join the other 31 teams in passing more often than they run.”
