Richard Sherman: Seahawks Coach Pete Carroll’s Philosophy is ‘Built for College’

It hasn't taken the 49ers new cornerback long to start taking shots at his old coach.

It will be months before San Francisco 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman takes the field against his former team, but he’s starting the war of words with the Seattle Seahawks anyway.

During an appearance on the Uninterrupted’s “The Tomahawk Show,” the four-time Pro Bowler said a big reason the ‘Hawks have failed to return to the Super Bowl-caliber form after two consecutive appearances is because coach Pete Carroll’s message is getting “stale.”

Sherman said Carroll, who had great success at USC before returning to the pros to coach Seattle, has had trouble getting through to veteran players in recent years because his motivational tactics had become tired.

“His philosophy is more built for college,” Sherman said. “Four years, guys rotate in, rotate out. We had kind of heard every story, every funny anecdote that he had. And honestly, because he just recycles them. And they’re cool stories, they’re great for team chemistry and building, etcetera, etcetera. But we had literally heard them all. We could recite them before he even started to say them.”

The outspoken defensive back also went on to say that the organization had “kind of lost their way” in how they evaluate players and too much emphasis is put on finding new, young talent.

The 49ers signed Sherman after he was cut this offseason. He will turn 30 later this month.
