The Red Wings Are So Terrible Arby’s Had to Change a Free Curly Fries Promotion

Three goals overall, instead of a hat trick, will now net fans a shot at free fries.

The Detroit Red Wings are so bad this year that they are costing their fans a chance not just at the Stanley Cup, but, even worse, at free curly fries from Arby’s.

For more than a decade, Arby’s has had a promotion in which fans would have the option to get free curly fries if a Red Wings player scored a hat-trick.

That hasn’t happened yet this year for the 1-6-2 squad and didn’t happen last year for last season’s 30-39-13 squad, so Arby’s altered the promotion and lowered the bar.

Now, fans have a shot at free fries if the Red Wings overall, rather than an individual player, score three or more goals.

“We want to continue to reward fans and give them the best chance possible to get free Arby’s Curly Fries,” an Arby’s spokesperson told ESPN via email. “After last season, we realized there were too few occurrences of Hat Tricks, leaving fans hungry for more Curly Fries. This year, we hope to reward our die-hard Arby’s and Red Wings fans with a chance to savor our Curly Fries more often.”

As some have pointed out, this could have just been a way for Arby’s to give away more fries because hat tricks are rare as is.

Still, considering the Red Wings have only scored three goals or more three times this season, the change seems justified. (The Red Wings scored three or more goals in a game 39 times last season.)

Given the team’s futility, fans of the fries are lucky Arby’s didn’t put the whole promotion on ice.
