Paying a High Price in Trade for Odell Beckham Could Be Costly

Acquiring Beckham would likely mean surrendering multiple first-round picks as well as agreeing to sign him to a pricey extension.

If another NFL team wants to receive Odell Beckham Jr. from the New York Giants via a trade, they’ll likely have to be willing to give up multiple first-round picks, according to reports.

In addition to the picks, that team would also have to be willing to sign the mercurial receiver, who is making $8.5 million in the final year of his rookie contract, to a lengthy extension with at least $30 million fully guaranteed.

So is Beckham worth both the draft bounty and the salary? Bleacher Report’s Doug Farrar isn’t convinced.

Even though Beckham posted the most receptions (288) targets (457) and yards per game (95.9) in NFL history over his first three seasons with the G-Men, there are concerns about him not only off the field, but on it as well.

Beckham excels at getting open but he struggles to make contested grabs and saw his catch rate drop from 70 percent in his rookie year to 60.8 percent in 2015 to 59.8 percent in 2016. At 5’11” and approximately 200 pounds, Beckham is on the smaller side and that isn’t changing.

“If an NFL team is interested in ponying up for Beckham and would give up multiple high draft picks, that team better have an offense that allows Beckham to get open using creative route concepts. And it better have at least one high-quality receiver able to make the contested catches that Beckham can’t,” Farrar writes. “In a fully integrated offense, Beckham could be the NFL’s ultimate difference-maker. But he won’t always be that on his own, and that should be factored into his value and the amount any team would need to trade.”
