Eagles quarterback Nick Foles has informed the team he wants to leave the nest.
After Philadelphia informed their backup signal-caller that they will be picking up his $20 million option for 2019, Foles told the team he will be opting out of the deal.
And, it’s clear he wants to do it because in order to void the contract Foles must pay the Eagles $2 million.
Now, if Philadelphia wants to keep Foles to back up Carson Wentz or trade him to another team, they will have to place the franchise tag on the 30-year-old.
Though it is not set quite yet, the franchise tag number for quarterbacks is expected to be around $25 million for next season.
If Philadelphia does franchise Foles and trade him, they are expected to want at least a third-round pick in return, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Potential quarterback-needy trade partners for the Eagles include the Jaguars, Broncos, Dolphins, and Redskins.
After winning MVP honors in Super Bowl LII, Foles completed 72 percent of his passes and threw for seven touchdowns and four interceptions in five regular-season games last season. He also helped guide the team to a playoff victory over the Bears in Chicago in the wild-card round.
