New Arizona head coach Kliff Kingsbury is bringing a strategy he used at Texas Tech to pros with the Cardinals – but it’s got nothing to do with X’s and O’s.

To help his millennial players get their “social media fix,” Kingsbury is planning to allow “cellphone breaks” during team meetings.

According to the coach, the breaks will come every 20 minutes or so, in some cases even earlier if he starts to see players lose interest.

“They’re itching to get to those things,” Kingsbury said. “You start to see kind of hands twitching and legs shaking, and you know they need to get that social media fix, so we’ll let them hop over there and then get back in the meeting and refocus.”

Kingsbury learned in college that sometimes shorter is better when it comes to meetings.

“I think coming from the college ranks to obviously, those young men, it’s got to be quick hitters, 20 minutes at a time, give them a break and get them back in,” he said. “We want to make sure that when we have them, they’re focused, and they’re locked in, and we’re maximizing their time.

In MLB, coaches have also had to loosen – or tighten – the rules in order to deal with their millennial players.

For example, the Toronto Blue Jays actually had to pass a team rule restricting the amount of time the club’s players can play the popular video game “Fortnite.”
