If the Carolina Panthers somehow manage to win the Super Bowl this season and get invited to the White House, don’t expect their new owner to accept the invitation.
Carolina’s soon-to-be owner David Tepper is not a big fan of President Trump, nor is he shy about making his opinion known.
“The economy’s really good right now, despite different things,” Tepper told a business school student at Carnegie Mellon University last month, according to Sports Illustrated. “Whether I like the person or not I’m not going to get into that – although I did call him a demented, narcissistic scumbag. And if you look up demented, narcissistic scumbag, you’ll see my name calling Trump that. Just Google those three words.” (It works.)
Clearly not one to mince words, Tepper joining the ranks of NFL owners could lead to the rift that has been developing between the league and Trump following the president’s criticism of the national anthem protests and his decision to refer to players who knelt as “sons of bitches.”
Despite his anti-Trump stance, the billionaire hedge fund manager is not exactly a clear liberal as he started out supporting former President Barack Obama in 2008, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in ’12 and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush in ’16.
If his bid to buy Carolina is approved, Tepper will pay a record-setting $2.2 billion for the team.
