Michael Jordan’s Father’s Murderer Seeks New Trial in 25-year-old Killing

Daniel Green was convicted of fatally shooting James Jordan on July 23, 1993.

More than 25 years after the fatal shooting of Michael Jordan’s father on July 23, 1993, the man convicted of pulling the trigger will have a day in court.

Convicted murderer Daniel Green will be in front of a North Carolina judge later this week who will hear arguments to determine if there’s cause to hold an evidentiary hearing that could lead to a new trial in the case.

Green and Larry Demery were convicted of killing James Jordan as he slept in his car in Robeson County. His body was found 11 days later in a South Carolina swamp.

At their trial in 1996, Demery said Green shot Jordan. Green, 44, has always maintained he helped dispose of Jordan’s body after Demery killed him.

“I think they should look at the evidence. If you look at the evidence, the evidence is going to speak for itself – that there is no evidence that I killed James Jordan, because I didn’t,” Green said in April. “I regret what I did. You know I was a kid.”

Demery got 40 years in prison after testifying Green was the triggerman; Green was sentenced to life in prison.

Green attorney will be arguing someone tampered with Jordan’s shirt after his autopsy to create a bullet hole matching the fatal gunshot wound, the Associated Press reports.

“This newly discovered evidence of tampering adds to the growing list of legal concerns and factual evidence which add weight to the conclusion that not only does Daniel Green deserve a new trial but that he is innocent of the murder of James Jordan,” said Green’s lawyer and North Carolina Center on Actual Innocence executive director Chris Mumma.
