Landon Donovan must have been happy.

An underdog Mexico squad defeated the heavily-favored defending champion German team in their opening round Group F game of the 2018 World Cup. Hirving Lozano provided the lone goal in the first half, and his teammates staved off constant German pressure in the second half to cement the stunner at Moscow’s Luzhiki Stadium on Sunday. It helped that goaltender Guillermo Ochoa proved to be unflappable in net.

Donovan, the former U.S. team great, sparked a backlash from some of his ex-teammates earlier when he declared he was rooting for rival Mexico with the United States out of the running.
