Is Julian Edelman Hiding PED Suspension Details Behind NFL Rules?

The Super Bowl MVP claims, incorrectly, league rules prohibit him from discussing it.

Patriots receiver Julian Edelman finished his season collecting the Super Bowl LIII MVP award in Atlanta, but began the season on the sidelines courtesy of a four-game suspension for PEDs.

And, though he probably would have been perfectly willing to discuss his post-Super Bowl plans — going to Disney World and then stopping by the Grammys to present an award — Edelman declined to discuss the circumstances surrounding his suspension during an interview with Peter King.

“People don’t know what happened,” Edelman told King. “I can’t sit here and [due to] the league rules say what happened.”

It may be true that people don’t know what happened or what Edelman tested positive for during the offseason, but he could actually talk about it.

The league’s confidentiality provision does allow Edelman to remain silent about his suspension if he so chooses, but he could waive that right and talk about the positive test if he wanted to.

But, if he did that and said something the NFL disagreed with, the NFL’s Management Council would then be allowed to “correct public claims made by [the] Player or his representatives about the discipline.”

Whether the league would want to correct whatever the reigning Super Bowl MVP had to say – if he actually said something – is another matter entirely.

During the interview, King also asked Edelman if he believes the suspension was deserved.

“I’m not going down that road,” Edelman said. “I served what I had to serve and I accept that. I know a lot of people were disappointed in me for it. I apologize. It’ll never happen again.”
