Johnny Manziel to the Patriots Isn’t as Crazy as It Sounds

The former Heisman winner completed 36 of 38 passes in front of a New England scout on Thursday.

Belichick, Brady, Gronkowski … Manziel?

While it’s not likely all four men will be members of the same team next season, there is a slight chance that the Patriots could be interested in bringing Johnny Manziel to New England.

On Thursday, Patriots scouts were in attendance to see Manziel throw passes to receiver Justin Priest and tight end Ross Dwelley at the University of San Diego’s Pro Day. Manziel reportedly completed 36 of his 38 passes and was later brought into an on-site facility so the Pats could get an official weight on him.

That’s far from an indication the Patriots are going to offer the former Heisman winner a contract, but it does at least show they’re doing their due diligence and could have some interest in bringing in Manziel to compete for the backup quarterback job (the same way they once did with college-star-turned-NFL-bust Tim Tebow.)

A few weeks ago, CBS analyst and former NFL wide receiver Nate Burleson shared his thoughts on the possibility of Johnny Football taking his talents to New England.

“Johnny can go there for a reason that not a lot of people realize. He’s not going to beat out Tom Brady, we all know that. I don’t think there’s any quarterback that can beat out Tom Brady as a free agent coming to the Pats,” Burleson said. “But there’s a competition that he would be confident in going into, and that’s the second-string position, which is my guy Brian Hoyer. Brian Hoyer (and) Johnny Manziel both played together (with the Cleveland Browns), so that second-string competition will be as high as ever, and it also would be like a memory for both of them and the best man will prevail.”
