Jemele Hill will be leaving her post as co-anchor of ESPN’s SportsCenter. Hill caused an uproar last year when she called President Trump a “bigot” and “white supremacist” on Twitter last September and was subsequently suspended for two weeks for violating the company’s social media guidelines. According to Buzzfeed, Hill made the decision to leave SportsCenter herself. She is not leaving ESPN however, and will instead write for The Undefeated, ESPN’s culture website about race and sports.
Hill’s anti-Trump tweets last year prompted backlash from Trump himself, who took to Twitter to call out the anchor. “With Jemele Hill at the mike, it is no wonder ESPN ratings have ‘tanked,’ in fact, tanked so badly it is the talk of the industry!,” he tweeted with a demand for an apology. Hill did ultimately apologize: “My comments on Twitter expressed my personal beliefs,” but adding that she regretted painting ESPN in an unfair light. According to Variety, Hill’s co-anchor, Michael Smith, will continue hosting the show alone.
