With the Packers at 4-5-1 and trailing the division-leading Bears by two and a half games, the heat level on Green Bay coach Mike McCarthy’s seat has gotten hotter with each loss.
And, a reported rift between the 13th-year coach and star quarterback Aaron Rodgers could lead to McCarthy’s tenure in Green Bay going up in flames.
According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, McCarthy needs to finish the year strong to have any shot at keeping his job in Green Bay. Rapoport also said there is a “disconnect” between McCarthy and his star quarterback.
“And here’s a couple reasons why [McCarthy could be gone],” Rapoport said. “One of them does involve the disconnect with Aaron Rodgers – the tension there regarding the direction of the offense. Rodgers has been pretty vocal about his frustration with play-calling, and the lack of creativity was there on Thursday night. That, of course, is something [Packers] CEO Mark Murphy will have to make a big decision on at the end of the year.”
Should Murphy decide to replace McCarthy this offseason, one option to take his spot could be New England’s Josh McDaniels.
