This could go down as one of the shortest deals in TV history.
As the New York Times reports that ESPN has canceled its partnership, Barstool Van Talk, with the irreverent blog Barstool Sports after just one show. Wrote ESPN president John Skipper on Twitter: “Effective immediately, I am canceling Barstool Van Talk. While we had approval on the content of the show, I erred in assuming we could distance our efforts from the Barstool site and its content.”
ESPN personality Sam Ponder had slammed the network’s decision to partner with the blog site just days before the show’s first airing. The Ringer had also rung in with an article about how the show, which would be based on Barstool’s podcast, Pardon My Take, ran in counterpoint to ESPN’s fairly conservative values in almost every way.
Not to mention a former potential employee published a particularly damning story on Twitter about how Barstool had made her sign a contract voiding her ability to speak out against sexism, racism, and other HR department no-no’s.
Talk about destined to fail.
