The Los Angeles Angels are about to lock up the most expensive athlete in the history of professional sports.

According to ESPN, the ballclub and star outfielder Mike Trout are in the process of finalizing a 12-year deal worth more than $430 million.

Under the terms of the deal, 27-year-old Trout will receive an average salary of nearly $36 million a year, topping Zack Greinke’s previous record average of $34.4 million.

The total value of the deal is $100 million more than the $330 million deal Bryce Harper inked with the Philadelphia Phillies earlier this month.

The 25th pick of the 2009 draft, Trout has slashed .307/.416/.573 with 240 home runs, 648 RBIs, 793 runs and 189 stolen bases in 1,065 games.

Trout, a native of Millville, New Jersey, has won two American League MVP awards and finished second four times. The belief is that this deal, which is technically an extension of his current six-year, $144.5 million deal, will keep him in LA for the remainder of his career

“The Angels are Millville West for Mike Trout,” ESPN’s Buster Olney‏ wrote on Twitter. “He knows the folks there, he knows they appreciate and care about him, and he’s never been one to look for a better, bigger deal elsewhere.”

That may be true, but it’s hard to imagine Trout signing a better, bigger deal anywhere else.
