Can Drew Brees’s Career Year Get Him in the GOAT Conversation?

At age 39, Brees is turning in what might be his best season ever.

In Week 10 of the NFL season, the Saints scored 51 points in a dominant 37-point win over the Bengals in Cincy.

Sure, it is the Bengals, but bear in mind that Cincinnati would be the No. 6 seed in the AFC if the playoffs began today.

The biggest reason for the huge win — which saw the Saints scored 28 points in the second quarter alone and end with 509 yards of total offense — was the play of quarterback Drew Brees.

At age 39, Brees is turning in what might be his best season ever and one that should put his name in the GOAT conversation along with Peyton Manning, Joe Montana and Tom Brady.

Through nine games, Brees is on pace to finish with more than 4,600 passing yards and 37 touchdowns. He’s also completing a ridiculous 77.3 percent of his passes, a percentage which would obliterate the single-season completion record if it holds up.

His numbers are good enough that Brees is certainly a front-runner for what would be his first MVP award. Should that individual accomplishment be paired with the Saints – who lead the league in scoring at 36.7 points per game – advancing to and possibly winning the Super Bowl, this could be one of the all-time great seasons for an NFL quarterback.

“When this season ends, Brees will likely be ranked first all-time in career completion percentage (67.27 percent), first in passing yards, and second in total touchdown passes,” according to The Ringer. “He’ll (likely) have an MVP award on his shelf, and maybe even his second Super Bowl ring. This could go down as a career year for Brees, and, if it does, it will have proved that Brees deserves mention with Manning and Brady as one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play the game.”
