For the first time in nearly three decades, a PGA Tour player has won back-to-back U.S. Opens.
His name, surprisingly, is Brooks Koepka.
Koepka was able to navigate the difficult terrain of Shinnecock Hills course well enough to notch a one-stroke victory over Tommy Fleetwood to capture only his third victory on the tour overall.
During the final round, during which Koepka’s playing partner Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed Tony Finau, Daniel Berger, and Fleetwood all challenged, the winner closed with a 2-under 68 to end the tournament with a 1-over 281 total.
When the U.S. Open heads to Pebble Beach in 2019, Koepka will attempt to match Willie Anderson as the only golfer to win three in a row, who accomplished the feat from 1903-05.
“I don’t want to say I didn’t think I could do it, but I knew that it was going to be that much more difficult,” Koepka said the win. “And to finally do it, it’s much more gratifying the second time. I can really appreciate how hard it is to win a major, and to win back-to-back is special, and my second major is cool.”
Next up is the British Open, before the PGA Championship concludes as the final major of the year.
