Arrests have been made in connection with last month’s killing in Ghana of an undercover journalist who exposed a corrupt FIFA official.
Though six people were arrested in the murder of Ahmed Hussein-Suale, all of the suspects were released on bail because there was “no strong evidence for now.”
Officials did not identify any of the suspects, but David Eklu, director general of police public affairs, did say they were “preliminary arrests based on reasonable suspicion.”
Prior to being shot dead by two gunmen on a motorbike, Hussein-Suale set an undercover sting that showed now-banned FIFA official Kwesi Nyantakyi accepting $65,000 in cash.
Following Hussein-Suale’s death, the investigative journalism house he worked for, Tiger Eye PI, said the killing looked like a professional hit.
“We … remain unshaken in our resolve to pursue nation-wreckers and make corruption a high-risk activity in the country,” Tiger Eye PI said in a statement after Hussein-Suale’s death. “Ahmed was an excellent, experienced investigative journalist.”
During the sting, which was captured on camera, the high-ranking official promised to use his position as the head of Ghanaian soccer to secure favorable deals for reporters who were posing as businessmen.
After being exposed, Nyantakyi was found guilty of bribery, corruption, and conflict of interest by an internal FIFA investigation and banned from soccer for life.
