AAF Coach: Tim Tebow Won’t Resurrect Football Career in New League

Steve Spurrier made overtures to Tebow, but the ex-Heisman winner is committed to MLB.

A pair of former Florida Gators who both who the Heisman won’t be teaming up to go after a title in the Alliance of American Football, at least not yet.

Steve Spurrier, the coach of the Orlando Apollos in the fledgling AAF, said that although he recently reached out to Tebow about returning to football, it isn’t going to happen.

“I don’t blame Tim,” Spurrier told Pro Football Talk Live. “Tim’s got a chance to go to Major League Baseball. I think Tim’s probably headed in the baseball direction. I don’t blame him. If I were in his situation, I’d probably do the same thing.”

Like Tebow, Spurrier also played for the Gators and won a Heisman Trophy as a member of the Gators. He later coached there for 12 years and led the team to a 1996 national championship.

In June, Tebow also declined Spurrier’s invitation to join his AAF team.

“He said coach, I’m gonna keep swinging the bat and see what happens,” Spurrier previously said on The Paul Finebaum Show. “I told him we’d have a No. 15 down in Orlando waiting for him.”

They may want to keep that No. 15 open because it’s no guarantee Tebow will make the major leagues this season. However, he will give it a shot and has earned an invitation to spring training with the New York Mets.
