Sports Illustrated has completed its list of the top 100 players in the MLB with an unsurprising conclusion: Mike Trout is the best player in baseball, and it’s not particularly close. A thumb injury prevented Trout from collecting his third MVP in 2017, but the 26-year-old will be healthy and at the peak of his powers in 2018. Jose Altuve, the heart and soul of the world champion Astros, clocked in as baseball’s second-best player, thanks to four straight 200-hit seasons and an unbelievable postseason. The heart and soul of the 2016 world champion Cubs, Kris Bryant, rounds out the top three. Max Scherzer, thanks to two consecutive Cy Young awards and remarkable durability, was the highest ranked pitcher on the list at number four, beating out the long-time best pitcher in baseball, seventh-ranked Clayton Kershaw.
