An active volcano in Antarctica may be harboring the right conditions for animals and plants to flourish beneath glaciers in an extensive and warm cave system, Australian Broadcast Corporation is reporting.
“It can be really warm inside the caves,” Dr. Ceridwen Fraser, a lead researcher of the study from Australian National University, said. “You could comfortably wear a t-shirt in there.”
“The results from this study gives us a really exciting, tantalizing glimpse of the sorts of plants and animals that might live beneath the ice in Antarctica.”
She goes on to say that DNA evidence shows there are “things living in these caves that we know nothing about that could even be new species.”
