An intimate group of family and invited guests gathered Thursday at Arlington National Cemetery to lay former astronaut and U.S. Senator John Glenn to rest, CBS reports.

Glenn, who became the first American to orbit the earth in 1962, died Dec. 8 at the age of 95. Thousands of people honored the legendary Marine when he laid in state for two days at the Ohio Statehouse rotunda.

The funeral ceremony began just after 9 a.m. local time.

Gen. Robert Neller, Commandant of the Marine Corps, served as funeral officer, providing remarks and presenting Sen. Glenn’s flag to his wife, Annie. Thursday marks what would have been their 74th wedding anniversary.

The service also included a procession to the graveside by caisson, a flyover, a graveside service and taps, the New York Times reports.
