As President and CEO of the International Rescue Committee (IRC), David Miliband oversees humanitarian assistance in over 40 war-torn countries as well as refugee resettlement in 26 American cities. The nonprofit provides emergency relief and long-term aid to those affected by conflicts and natural disasters.
Born to parents fleeing the violence in Europe during World War II, Miliband knows firsthand how difficult starting life anew can be for refugees. The IRC expanded its ability under Miliband’s leadership to quickly provide relief, particularly in response to the crisis in Syria and the Ebola epidemic in Africa.
Miliband has worked to advance human rights previously, serving as the United Kingdom’s Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs from 2007 to 2010. Before that, he was Secretary of State for the Environment, where he helped pave the way for the first legally binding global requirements for reducing emissions. Miliband also represented South Shields as a member of Parliament, from 2001 to 2013. He and his brother Ed, a candidate for Prime Minister in the 2010 election, were the first siblings to sit in the Cabinet together since 1938.
His time in politics and the humanitarian world have earned Miliband the reputation as a fierce advocate for the less fortunate. Former President Bill Clinton called him “one of the ablest, most creative public servants of our time.”
Please join us Friday, November 4 at 1 pm ET as RealClearLife Contributing Editor (and Pulitzer Prize winner) David Vise interviews David Miliband on Facebook Live.
Miliband will answer questions about the compelling stories of displaced people and their families; how the IRC seeks to avoid terrorists; the vast nature of the global refugee crisis; and the biggest risks where new refugee problems could develop.
