Jack Phillips made national headlines in 2012 after he refused to bake a wedding cake for a gay couple due to his religious beliefs.
Fox News is reporting that since then, he’s not only lost a chunk of his business revenue — he’s been on the receiving end hateful rhetoric, violent death threats, and has fought continuously to shield his wife and daughter from receiving the brunt end of the vitriol.
“In all of this, the threats against me or disparaging comments, the worst part is that I have to answer the phone so they’re not threatening my wife or my daughter when they pick it up,” Phillips told Fox News. “They don’t wait to see who’s on the phone. You pick up the phone, they’re already talking.”
The Supreme Court has reportedly agreed to take the case, deciding whether or not Phillips was discriminating when he wouldn’t agree to bake the cake. He has been branded as a homophobe by many for his refusal to treat the couple like he would have other customers.
Phillips told Fox News that he offered the couple anything they wanted in the store, but drew the line at “actively participating” in the couple’s wedding by creating the cake from scratch.
