After six days of deliberations left the jury hopelessly deadlocked, the judge presiding over the Bill Cosby sexual assault case declared a mistrial Saturday.
The case revolved allegations that Cosby drugged and raped Andrea Constand at his Philadelphia home in 2004. The Cosby Show star, however, claimed the encounter was consensual.
Despite the result on Saturday, Cosby’s image as “America’s Dad” will forever be tarnished. Constand is one of 60 women that have come forward to accuse Cosby of having raped or physically assaulted them over a five decade span.
A spokesperson for the comic’s wife, Camille Cosby, read a statement slamming the prosecutors, the judge and the media.
Gloria Allred, the high-profile lawyer who represents several Cosby’s accusers, meanwhile warned, that “it’s too early to celebrate Mr. Cosby.”
Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele vowed to retry the case.
