Austrian cyclist and daredevil Markus Stöckl set a world speed record by riding a mountain bike down, of all things, a volcano in Nicaragua. Not only that, but it wasn’t some trumped up, supersonic bike. It was the run-of-the-mill backyard shed type.
In this Red Bull video of the stunt, Stöckl shows off the stock mountain bike he used, noting that “you can buy this one at any shop.” As you’ll see, Stöckl hits over 102 mph on his way down the imposing side of the huge volcano; the previous record, set by French cyclist Eric Barone, stood for nine years.
