Gwen Stefani is Marie Claire’s holiday cover girl. Over the past few years, Stefani has come back from her very public break-up with her husband of 13 years, Gavin Rossdale. The 43-year-old, who had previously felt blocked creatively, channeled the pain of divorce into her first number-one solo record, This is What Truth Feels Like. Then, she, again publicly, fell head over heels with Blake Shelton, her fellow Voice judge, on national TV.

“For a long time, I could not understand why I’d had so much heartache in my life,” she told Marie Claire. She had been in two serious relationships before Shelton, and ended up heartbroken each time. “I have parents who are still married and in love,” she said. “I had such loving role models. I didn’t understand it.” But now, she said, Shelton is her “best friend.”

The two are clearly in love, if their Instagram and media presence has anything to say about it.

She told Marie Claire that through all this, she learned that “heartbreak was supposed to happen, that it was my purpose to write about and share my story.” She says she feels very lucky and honored when she meets people who can relate to her story.

As for her career, she’s hoping to be a part of writing something, because “that confidence has come back now, and I know I have something to offer.”
