Foo Fighters Release Surprise New Single, ‘Run’

Music video for song directed by lead singer Dave Grohl

The last time fans heard new music from Dave Grohl and his Foo Fighters was the eight-song Sonic Highways set, which complemented the same-named HBO miniseries.

Their last studio album, though, was 2011’s Wasting Light.

Today, fans don’t have to wait any longer. The Foo Fighters surprised everyone by releasing their first new song in three years, “Run,” with an elaborate six-minute-plus video to complement the tune, directed by Grohl.

Featuring the band as the entertainment at an old people’s home—with each of its members dressed as old men—the video starts off fairly calmly but erupts (with the song) around the 1:50 mark, with an old man stage-diving into the crowd of amazed onlookers. The video, of course, is rife with classic Foo Fighters’ tongue-in-cheek humor—a staple of their music video catalog—right down to the Michael Jackson/Thriller nod at the six-minute mark (definitely worth sticking around for).

Fueled by a repetitious guitar riff and hardcore punk–esque howls from Grohl, the song’s loud section is reminiscent of the some of the band’s harder tracks like 2011’s Grammy-winning “White Limo“—while the rest is that anthemic pop that’s made the band one of the most famous acts of the last 20-plus years.
