Disney has announced that Rian Johnson — who directed the upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi — will be creating an all-new Stars Wars trilogy. It will not include Luke Skywalker, though, and will instead introduce new characters from “a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored,” according to Esquire

“We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, according to Variety. “He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”

It is not yet clear whether the movies will be labeled 10, 11, and 12, or if the new trilogy will leave behind the sequential numbering. No other details have been announced and it is unclear when the filming and release will be.

“We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi,” Johnson and Bergman said in a joint statement, according to Variety. “Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can’t wait to continue with this new series of films.”

The Last Jedi is set to release Dec. 15, and it will be interesting to see how long fans have to wait for the new trilogy. Will the new movies be set decades before or after the Skywalker years? Will anyone we know and love return for a cameo? We will just have to wait and see.
